Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) are qualifying organizations that provide representation for free or a nominal fee to low-income taxpayers involved in tax disputes with the IRS or that provide education on taxpayer rights and responsibilities to taxpayers for whom English is a second language.
Clinics help low income taxpayers resolve tax disputes, protect and preserve taxpayer rights, and assist ESL taxpayers in understanding and obtaining proper tax benefits. The clinics are operated and managed by non-profit organizations, law schools, or business schools. Each clinic independently determines if prospective clients meet the income poverty guidelines and other criteria before it agrees to represent a client.
Qualified organizations can use LITCs to provide opportunities for their students, staff, and volunteers to acquire practical experience and serve the local community. Academic institutions and non-profit organizations can apply for up to $100,000 in matching funds.
To find out more about these clinics, visit the LITC pages on www.irs.gov/advocate or IRS Publication 4134, Low Income Taxpayer Clinic List.
